SkyRidge Medical Center, Providing Digital Mammography

CLEVELAND, Tenn.- SkyRidge Medical Center has expanded its health and wellness services available to women with the addition of digital mammography. 

A digital mammogram is like a traditional film screen mammography.  Both use x-ray to generate images of the breast.  However, instead of using film to capture and record the image, a digital mammogram uses a special detector to capture and convert x-ray into a digital image.  The resulting digital images are immediately available to the radiologists for diagnosis. 

The radiologists can view and manipulate the images on high-resolution computer monitors that enhance visualization of the structures within the breast tissue.  They can also adjust to brightness and contrast, and zoom in on specific areas to help detect small calcium deposits, masses, and other changes that may be signs of early cancer. 

Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.  Statistics demonstrate that one in eight women may develop breast cancer sometime in her life.  If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97%. 

SMC’s commitment to digital mammography, through the use of the new Selenia™ digital mammography from Hologic®, is a part of our continuing commitment to provide our patients with the quality of care they expect and deserve in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer.  It allows the radiologist to view the x-ray image more closely by zeroing in on suspicious or concerning areas.
